Sant Dnyaneshwar - The Great Saint of India

Saint (संत) Dnyaneshwar is one of the greatest Hindu saints, poets and philosophers of Maharashtra state, India from the 13th century belonging to the Nath Sampradaya (an association of devotees who consider Lord Shiva as their first Guru).

Saint (संत) Dnyaneshwar was born in the year 1275 on Krishna Janmashtami in Maharashtra – Apegaon to Shree Vithalpant and Rukhmini bai.

His siblings were brothers, Saint (संत) Nivruttinath (who was also his Guru), Sopan, and sister Muktabai.

He was one of the first philosophers who demystified the Bhagavad Gita from Sanskrit into Marathi verses (ovis) with a commentary. This came to be known as “Shri Dnyaneshwari” and thus opened the floodgates of spiritual knowledge including kundalini, and metaphysics for the benefit of masses.

Saint (संत) Dnyaneshwar is affectionately called as ‘Mauli’ (mother) by his devotees.

He also wrote Haripath – a set of abhangas (devotional poems), Amrutanubhava (experiences in yoga and philosophy) and Changdev Pasashthi which are important milestones in Marathi literature.

“Pasaydaan” (a phalashruti of the Dnyaneshwari) is a famous Universal Prayer which focuses on bliss, inner peace and welfare of the whole world (Vishwa Kalyaan) without any reference to any religion.

Here is one of the miracles that demonstrated his supernatural power:

Yogi Changdeo who had subdued all fierce beings like the tiger and the serpent by his yogic power. After knowing the power of Saint (संत) Dnyaneshwar, Yogi Changdeo decided to see him. He rode on a tiger and was using a serpent as a whip. At that time, Saint (संत) Dnyaneshwar and his brothers were sitting on a compound wall outside their house. When they were told that Yogi Changdeo was coming to them on tiger’s back they made the wall itself to move and thus went forward to receive Yogi Changdeo. When Yogi Changdeo found that Saint (संत) Dnyaneshwar had control over inanimate objects as against his control on living beings, he was completely subdued, and became his disciple.

At the young age of 21, Saint (संत) Dnyaneshwar took Sanjeevan samadhi at Alandi in Maharashtra state, India.

Nirvikalpa (Sanjeevan) Samadhi is a state of awareness where transcendental consciousness remains. There is no mind and there is whole freedom, peace, ecstasy and bliss. You become the object of enjoyment, the enjoyer, and the experience of enjoyment itself. In Nirvikalpa Samadhi, one is free from modifications and imaginations.

Dr. Raghunath Narayan Shukla, a retired IAS officer and scientist, proved the existence of cosmic energy at the samadhi of Saint Dyaneshwar. He used instruments such as Scintilation and Bolometer which measure gama rays to x-rays, ultraviolate and infra-red in terms of temperature. This finding was later confirmed through astral survey by Klice Nobel who had visited Alandi and embraced the samadhi. Mr. Nobel said that his group had identified 162 cosmic energy spots in India and Saint Dynaneshwar’s samadhi at Alandi was one of the spots. Therefore, he was eager to visit Alandi.

Such is the aura of this saint that even today after 700 years, thousands of devotees especially from the ‘varkari’ sect (A pilgrim for Hindu religious movement) pay a visit to Alandi for a glimpse of his Samadhi which is believed to give ‘moksha’ (liberation from the cycle of rebirth.)
